Why has Dulcinea Farms decided to offer
a miniature size watermelon? |
Our research showed that, while
consumers absolutely love watermelon and
have fun eating it, they do not like the
inconvenience of buying and carrying
home a regular large watermelon, and
they also dislike the difficulty and
mess of cutting and storing it and
disposing of the rinds. DULCINEA™
PUREHEART™ Seedless Watermelon was
developed to offer the best of crimson
red, extra sweet watermelon flavor,
juiciness, crisp texture and
convenience. Consumers have asked for
fresh produce items of consistent high
quality that are also convenient. |
Are any of Dulcinea Farms products
genetically modified? |
At the current time, we do not have any
genetically modified products. All of
our products are developed through
conventional cross-breeding or
hybridization. |
What does the process of cross-breeding
watermelons involve? |
Seedless watermelons are called
triploids. The process is basic
hybridization with a bit of a twist
developed in Japan in the 1950s but
really made to work well in the 1980's.
The seed of the hybrid produces sterile
seeds that, for the most part, do not
mature in the seedless watermelon. When
present, these pips do not affect
eating quality at all. |

How do DULCINEA™ PUREHEART™ Seedless
Watermelons differ in terms of flavor,
size, color and nutritional value (lycopene)? |
DULCINEA™ PUREHEART™ Seedless
Watermelons have a higher brix or
sweetness level (a consistent average of
12 brix or greater) than traditional
watermelons, and that this sweetness
extends from the first bite all the way
down to the very thin 1/8 to 1/4 rind.
The thin rind yields more edible fruit
and additional value. DULCINEA™
PUREHEART™ Seedless Watermelons are also
very juicy and have a crisp texture and
a deep crimson red color. The deep
crimson color inherently has a higher
carotenoid level, including lycopene. |
What is the average size and weight of
DULCINEA™ PUREHEART™ Seedless
Watermelons? |
Our watermelons generally range in size
between 4 to 6 pounds with a diameter of
about 6 to 8 inches, about the size of a
large cantaloupe. |
What has been the consumer response to
date? |
Both our DULCINEA™ PUREHEART™ Seedless
Watermelons and our DULCINEA™ Extra
Sweet Tuscan Style Cantaloupes have
generated incredible, overwhelmingly
positive response. We currently have a
shortage of product due to the high
demand, with retailers and consumers
asking for more than our current (and
projected) production. Our website has
been inundated with positive consumer
feedback. |

What attributes does the DULCINEA™ Extra
Sweet Tuscan Style Cantaloupe have that
other cantaloupes dont? |
Our cantaloupe is distinguished by its
deep-grooved outer appearance and juicy,
super-sweet and full-flavored fruit
inside. The color of the exterior
grooves indicates the degree of
ripeness, with dark green grooves
indicating a sweet, firm fruit inside.
Lighter, golden grooves (or partially
green and golden grooves) indicate that
the cantaloupe has achieved a softer
texture and a full, more intense
cantaloupe flavor. |
What types of additional or improved
smaller watermelons do you hope to offer
in the future? |
Future developments could include unique
rind colors and patterns with different
colors of fruit inside. We are also
working to create fewer and smaller
pips and to deliver consistently
higher nutritional benefits, like
vitamins and antioxidants, with a high
level of confidence. |

How
should I store and handle my DULCINEA™
PUREHEART™ Seedless Watermelons? |
Our watermelons are vine-ripened and
ready to be eaten when picked. They can
be kept for short periods of time, up to
2 weeks, uncut at room temperature. Wash
the exterior of your watermelon with
soap and water before cutting. Once cut,
package what is not eaten in closed
plastic containers or bags and put back
in the refrigerator. |
